Shopify Customer Accounts and return requests

A customer account return flow works only when the store, account experience, app extension and order access fit together. Confirm those pieces before putting a portal link in your returns policy.

Pre-launch information. Public availability and final plan access are subject to Shopify review.

Understand the account experience first

Shopify stores may use different customer account experiences. A customer-facing extension built for new Customer Accounts should not be described as a feature of classic accounts unless the app explicitly supports that environment. Check the store's active account experience and the extension's current compatibility before planning a launch.

In Give Me Another's current build, the customer-facing return extension targets Shopify's new Customer Accounts. Classic customer accounts do not provide this extension entry point. Merchants should confirm the requirement against the current installation instructions before enabling customer access.

Confirm the extension is enabled and visible

A compatible app does not automatically mean its entry point is visible to every customer. Confirm the app is installed in the intended store, the relevant account extension is enabled and the account page presents it where customers expect to find it. Test the signed-in experience on both desktop and mobile.

Use a test customer and an order that represents a normal purchase. Check that the extension opens from the order context and that its title, action and support links make sense. Do not use a real customer account to test internal setup if a safe test account is available.

Keep the request connected to an order the customer can access

Starting from a signed-in order helps establish which customer and line item the request concerns. The app should validate that the account is entitled to view the order rather than trusting an order number supplied in a form. If the customer cannot access an order, provide a support route that allows staff to investigate without disclosing another person's information.

The current Give Me Another flow authenticates through the public customer account interface and checks that the signed-in customer owns the requested order. It evaluates the order and item before presenting the available return or exchange choices.

Explain eligibility before a customer submits

Customers should know why an item may not be eligible. The return window, order state, item type, prior activity, plan allowance and merchant settings can all affect the available choices. State the return period and any product exclusions where customers can find them before they start.

For same-product exchanges, a requested size or colour variant must be available for sale and have inventory in the current Give Me Another implementation. Different-product requests require a Growth or Scale entitlement and merchant configuration. Make the distinction clear so a customer does not expect every catalogue item to be selectable.

Describe what happens after submission

A portal should show that a request was received and explain whether a person will review it. Submission does not approve a return, issue a refund, generate a label, reserve stock or send a replacement. Those are separate actions governed by the merchant's decision, Shopify order state and fulfilment process.

Tell customers how they will receive an update, which team handles questions and what information to include if they contact support. Consistent wording between the account experience, returns policy and email reduces uncertainty and duplicate requests.

Test the full path with realistic account states

Check an eligible paid order, an order outside the configured window, an order with an unavailable variant and a customer who cannot access the order. Verify that each case presents only the expected options and that the merchant queue receives the request with enough context to review it.

Repeat the test after changing account settings or app configuration. Record the store, account type, extension state and order conditions used, so a later support investigation can reproduce the result without relying on memory.

Questions merchants ask

Does Give Me Another support classic customer accounts?

Its current customer-facing extension targets Shopify's new Customer Accounts; classic accounts do not have this extension entry point.

Can an order number alone start a request?

The app flow checks the signed-in customer's access to the order. Merchants should avoid workflows that expose another customer's order.

Does the customer account extension process the refund?

No. It submits a request for merchant review; order, refund and fulfilment actions remain separate.
