How to handle size and colour exchanges on Shopify
A size or colour exchange can preserve a sale when the original product is right but the variant is not. Make the option easy to request, then check the exact variant, order and fulfilment details before changing the order.
Pre-launch information. Public availability and final plan access are subject to Shopify review.
Define what counts as a same-product exchange
Start by deciding whether the shopper may switch only between variants of the same product, such as one size or colour, or whether your policy allows another item. Keep this definition clear in the policy and the customer interface. A product variant is a specific choice within a product; it is not a guarantee that the choice is in stock or appropriate for every order.
If a shopper wants a different product, treat that as a distinct exchange path. Give Me Another's current application plan definitions put different-product exchange requests on Growth and Scale. The entitlement still depends on the merchant enabling the option and the order meeting the configured rules.
Check the original order line
Confirm that the signed-in customer can access the order and that the original line is eligible under the store's return window and policy. Check the order's payment and fulfilment state, item quantity and any prior return activity before accepting another request. These checks reduce duplicate or out-of-policy requests.
Explain which date starts the return clock and how exclusions work. If an order is partly fulfilled or has already been refunded, the next available action may differ. Use the actual Shopify order state and your own written policy rather than promising that every purchase can be exchanged.
Offer variants that the customer can actually request
For a same-product exchange, the requested variant needs to exist in the product catalogue and be available for sale. In the current Give Me Another app flow, the variant must also have inventory greater than zero. A customer may therefore see fewer choices than the full set of historical variants or may need to choose another option.
Inventory can change between request and processing. Treat the selected variant as a request and recheck stock before committing to a replacement. If stock has changed, contact the customer with available alternatives or explain the next step under your policy.
Decide whether review is manual or conditional
Manual review is the clearest starting point: a staff member checks the order, reason and variant, then decides whether to proceed. Give Me Another's current plan map defines conditional approval for eligible requests on Growth and Scale. The merchant must configure the supported reasons and order-age conditions; this is not blanket approval for all exchanges.
Test each enabled condition against realistic order examples. Confirm that a request outside the configured reason, order age or item eligibility still follows the expected manual route. Keep an auditable explanation of which condition applied and who handles any exception.
Handle price, refund and fulfilment as separate work
A size or colour change may have a different price or stock position. Before processing, check the price difference, payment implications and fulfilment plan in Shopify. Submitting or approving a request does not collect a top-up, issue a refund, create return postage or reserve the replacement variant.
Tell customers when they should send the original item, how the store will provide any return instructions and when the replacement will be sent. Only promise a dispatch date after the fulfilment team has confirmed stock and arranged the shipment.
Use exchange reasons to improve product information
Review exchange reasons by product and variant. Repeated requests for the next size up can signal that a fit note or measurement chart is missing; repeated colour changes may indicate that product photography needs clearer lighting or colour descriptions. Treat these patterns as clues to investigate, not proof of a product defect.
Compare the pattern with support conversations and returns data before changing sizing guidance. Make one clear product-page improvement, then observe whether the same reason becomes less common over time.

Questions merchants ask
Can Shopify shoppers request a different size?
They can request another variant when the store and app support that option, the order is eligible and the requested variant is available.
Does an exchange request reserve inventory?
No. Recheck stock before processing the request; submission does not reserve a replacement.
Which Give Me Another plans include a different-product request?
The current application source defines that entitlement for Growth and Scale, subject to merchant settings and request eligibility.
